Ordnance Survey GB - New NGD Data |
The OS National Geographic Database (NGD) is a single store of Ordnance Survey’s authoritative data for Great Britain. It is built for analytical uses and is designed to be the bedrock of more intelligent solutions. The NGD is the next generation of geospatial data is gradually replacing the older products.
OS NGD data can be filtered and configured to your requirements so you can find the data you need without having to download whole datasets. Its data structure is designed to help answer questions and develop intelligent solutions, with quicker access, loading and implementation.
The database comprises nine themes, including Address, Buildings, Land, Transport and more, and these are made up of one or more Collections, each of which contains a set of Feature Types. You can determine exactly what data you want to access.

NGD Address
|
| All of the attribution data and geometry that is present within AddressBase Premium is present within the NGD Address product. The address data is broken into two collections – GB and Islands.
There are 5 feature types plus the Royal Mail PAF data:
- Built Address
- Historic Address
- Non-Addressable Object
- Pre-Build Address
- Street Address
The data is available in two formats, CSV and GeoPackage (gpkg)

NGD Buildings |
The OS NGD Buildings Theme contains building features which meet the definition of a permanent roofed construction, usually with walls. Embedded height attribution is available for Building and Building Part features, enabling users to create simple height models.
OS NGD Buildings data is the most comprehensive and high-quality set of buildings data available for Great Britain ever produced by OS.
In comparison to OS MasterMap Download products, OS NGD buildings data has been enriched with additional attribution, including the following:
- Geometry change metadata
- A Description attribute to provide a one-word or simple phrase description of a feature
- Detailed land use classification
- Detailed land cover classification
- Capture specification to give details about the geography of the area a feature resides in (that is, urban, rural, or moorland)
- Roof shape, aspect and material
- Solar panel and green roof presence
- Number of floors within a building
Building age
- Basement presence
- Building construction material
The OS NGD Buildings Theme is made up of the OS NGD Building Features Collection, which in turn is comprised of Building, Building Access Location, Building Line and Building Part Feature Types.

NGD Geographical Names |
Geographical names provide orientation and identity to places; they are named locations in the real world, such as cities, towns, beaches and reservoirs. The dataset offers a comprehensive list of names of features and places of geographic significance captured and collated by Ordnance Survey, represented as points or polygons. You can use the dataset to perform quick and accurate gazetteer searches as well as high-level visualisation and spatial analysis of named features and places.
The OS NGD Geographical Names Theme is made up of the OS NGD Named Features Collection, which in turn is comprised of four feature types: Crowd Sourced Name Point, Named Area, Named Point and Named Road Junction.

NGD Land |
The OS NGD Land Theme contains point, line and polygon features depicting land cover information. These features can be manmade (for example, residential gardens, tennis courts, construction sites) or natural land (for example, heath or rough grassland, marsh, mixed trees). Features which are exclusively associated with buildings, structures, land use, transport, and water are excluded from the OS NGD Land Features Collection and can instead be found in their respective OS NGD features collections.
The OS NGD Land Theme is made up of the OS NGD Land Features Collection, which in turn is comprised of five feature types: Land, Land Point, Landform, Landform Line, and Landform Point.

NGD Land Use |
The OS NGD Land Use Theme contains features which are geographical representations of areas identified as having a specific purpose (such as schools, universities, and caravan parks), as well as information about access to such areas.
In comparison with OS data from our traditional Download products, the OS NGD Land Use Theme data has been enriched with additional attribution.
The OS NGD Land Use Theme is made up of the OS NGD Land Use Features Collection, which in turn is comprised of the Site and Site Access Location Feature Types.

NGD Structures |
The OS NGD Structures Theme contains structure features which are of manmade construction but are not buildings, such as clock towers, bridges, arches, and bandstands. Embedded height attribution is available for chimneys, roofed tanks and glasshouses, enabling users to create simple height models of these structures. Both manmade and vegetated field boundaries are regarded as structures.
In comparison with OS data from the traditional products, OS NGD structures data has been enriched with additional attribution, including the following:
- Geometry change metadata
- A Description attribute to provide a one-word or simple phrase description of a feature
- Detailed land use classification
- Detailed land cover classification
- Capture specification to give details about the geography of the area a feature resides in (that is, urban, rural, or moorland)
- Height and width values for Field Boundary features
- Data structure
The OS NGD Structures Theme is made up of the OS NGD Structure Features Collection, which in turn is comprised of five feature types: Compound Structure, Field Boundary, Structure, Structure Line and Structure Point.

NGD Transport |
The OS NGD Transport Theme provides a definitive network dataset and topographic depiction of Great Britain’s roads, railways, tracks and paths. It brings Ordnance Survey’s large-scale road and path content, and routing information together with authoritative information from the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) and the Trunk Road Street Gazetteer (TRSG).
The OS NGD Transport Theme is made up of three collections, which in turn are comprised of 39 feature types. The three collections are OS NGD Routing and Asset Management Information (RAMI), OS NGD Transport Features, and OS NGD Transport Network.

NGD Water |
The OS NGD Water Theme contains both the topographic and network representations of water features across Great Britain. The theme is made up of two collections (OS NGD Water Features and OS NGD Water Network), which in turn are made up of a combined total of 11 feature types.
The OS NGD Water Features Collection contains topographic feature types that have geometry, feature classification (for example, a drain or an open reservoir) and other additional information attributed:
- Inter Tidal Line features represent watercourses that extend across the intertidal zone.
River Basin District Catchment features define a river basin or several river basins, together with coastal waters, as published by the authoritative national water bodies.
- Tidal Boundary features show the alignment of the limit of tidal water at specific states of the tide.
- Tidal Boundary Continuous High and Tidal Boundary Continuous Low features provide consistent and continuous mean high water and mean low water tidelines.
- Areas of permanent water are listed as Water features – these are a polygon topographic representation only.
- Features associated with permanent water which are too small to be captured as a Water feature but are considered to be of interest for capture are listed as Water Point features (for example, a waterfall).
- Waterbody Catchment features represent the unit of surface water being the whole (or part) of a stream, river or canal, lake or reservoir, as published by the authoritative national water bodies.
The OS NGD Water Theme is made up of two collections: OS NGD Water Features and OS NGD Water Network. The OS NGD Water Features Collection is comprised of eight feature types: Inter Tidal Line, River Basin District Catchment, Tidal Boundary, Tidal Boundary Continuous High, Tidal Boundary Continuous Low, Water, Water Point, and Waterbody Catchment. The OS NGD Water Network Collection is made up of three feature types: Water Link, Water Link Set, and Water Node.
